Relationship of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) intake to peripheral neuropathy (PN) among adults with diabetes in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004

چکیده
Objective: This study investigated the association between dietary intake of PUFAs and PN in the U.S. population. Research Design and Methods: We analyzed data from NHANES 1999-2004 for adults≥ 40 years with diagnosed diabetes, an assessment of PN and reliable 24-hour dietary recall. The dietary intake of PUFAs was analyzed by PN status. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds of having PN in higher quintiles of PUFA intake compared with the lowest quintile. Results: The mean dietary intake of linolenic acid was 1.25±0.07g among adults with PN, significantly lower than 1.45±0.02g among those without PN. After controlling for potential confounding variables, adults whose linolenic acid intake in the highest quintile had lower odds of PN compared with the lowest quintile (adjusted odds ratio: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.21-0.77). Conclusions: Among adults with diagnosed diabetes, dietary intake of linolenic acid is positively associated with lower odds of PN.

متن کاملSuboptimal Plasma Long Chain n-3 Concentrations are Common among Adults in the United States, NHANES 2003–2004
Population data on long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCn-3 PUFA) status from biomarkers of dietary intake is lacking. The objectives were to describe plasma LCn-3 PUFA concentrations and compare them to concentrations associated with cardiovascular health and dietary recommendations for two servings of seafood/week. Fasting plasma fatty acids were measured among 1386 subjects ≥20 y...

Low and high intake of fat consumption regardless of its kind can jeopardize personal and public health. Despite the importance of quality and quantity of fat in the diet and its relationship with some chronic disorders such as coronary heart disease, some types of cancers, obesity and diabetes, the consumption pattern of fats and their . constituent fatty acids have not yet been assessed in ou...
متن کاملRelationship of the Reported Intakes of Fat and Fatty Acids to Body Weight in US Adults
Dietary fat composition may modulate energy expenditure and body weight. Little is known about the relationship between fatty acid intake and body weight at a population level. The purposes of this study were to compare intakes of energy, macronutrients, and individual fatty acids across BMI categories (1) for the US adult population and, (2) by sociodemographic groups. Reported dietary intake ...
متن کاملFatty acids intake in the Mexican population. Results of the National Nutrition Survey 2006
BACKGROUND There is growing evidence that quality, rather that quantity of fat is the determinant of cardiovascular risk. The objective of the study is to describe quantitatively the intake and adequacy of fatty acid classes among the Mexican population aged 5-90 years from a probabilistic survey. METHODS Dietary intake of individual and classes of fatty acids was computed from the dataset of...
